TRAVEL DAY TO ROME
This was an easy, not-much-sightseeing day! Pasquale had given us options for getting to Rome from Sorrento. The one we picked was about E80 but very convenient. He drove us around 7:30 down to a tour bus/car/van parking lot with all our luggage (our LAST hurtling trip down that old Roman road!). Our driver spoke little English but Angie was able to communicate. It was a lovely comfortable Mercedes-Benz sedan.
The two way roads until we almost reached Naples were slow and twisting, as they had been on the bus coming from the Naples Airport when we arrived in Sorrento. But once we hit the AutoStrada, our driver sailed along in the left lane all the way.
We arrived at Via Amatrice 50, and Anna was waiting for us! The apartment is a lovely two rooms on the 5th floor overlooking a park. You get to it by a TINY elevator that holds 3 people with two French-type doors you have to close first before it will move. Anna and I went up with the suitcases. Angie and Cathy walked up and down the 5 flights most times! I don’t think they trusted the elevator!
Cathy and Angie had a large bedroom and I had the neatest bed, that folds into what looks like a dresser on the back and sits up against the wall. It flips out into a single bed, very comfortable. Anna left us to settle in and we walked around the neighborhood. Anna had shown me the way to the Metro stop 2 blocks away and to the train stop a different direction where Michelle would arrive the next morning. We would all only have 1 day together and then on Sunday Angie and Cathy would fly out of Fuimilco airport for New York, through Dublin.
The three of us walked around the neighborhood and headed down Libia street, past Anna’s apartment (unknowingly!) to a church where I went in to light more candles and the others went across the street to the ATM to get money. We headed down to the most modern McDonald’s we’ve ever seen! You ordered at a machine in the middle of the room and got a ticket. Then you brought the ticket to the counter to pay and order. We enjoyed some fries and coffee and then headed back to the apartment. We stopped at a Tabac shop to buy tickets for the metro the next day.
Later that evening Anna came back and we sat in the Bar/Cafe downstairs as they were having a Sangria night with apperitivos laid out! This bar has wi-fi so we had to be there to get connected. It’s amazing how used to being connected we are! We lose the connection when we get past the second floor in the apartment. We’ve been able to stand outside the bar when they are closed and get on; unless it rains!
We all spent a comfortable night sleeping!
(HAVING TROUBLE WITH INTERNET HERE IN ROME. WILL EDIT TO ADD PICTURES LATER)
