After our leisurely float trip with Lewis and Clark
Expeditions in the morning, we took a drive the owner had recommended to us up
by the Elk Refuge. The scenery was lovely with great shots back at the Tetons
as well as a herd of buffalo with calves crossing the road. We also saw some
weird colored antelope crossing the road so we stopped and took lots of
pictures.

On the other side of the main highway between Yellowstone
and Jackson was the official Teton Park entrance. We stopped at the Visitors’
Center which was beautiful, all glass on one side, with interesting animal
displays, and another stamp for our Passports.
There is a nice bike trail with lots of riders I think out
from Jackson. It keeps the bikers off the road which can be pretty dangerous
with all the RVs, trucks, trailers and cars. We took a ride past Jenny Lake to
see the crowded parking lot where we would be hiking in the morning.
Across from there we took a side trip to see an old
homestead (by Bill Menor) from the 1800s and ferry crossing of the Snake River.
The house was now a gift shop and Judy from LaCrosse, WI, was summering here
and working in the gift shop. All the gift shops at the Visitors/ Centers and
others are run by the Grand Teton Association. Judy is a substitute teacher and
she just loves it out here. This is her second year. Her husband is passionate
for the Boundary areas in Minnesota so that’s where he is! It’s tough when
people near retirement and want to do vastly different things! Being single is
easier that way; no one has to agree!!
It was pouring so we dashed past the vehicle stable where
some wagons were housed and then the house where the meeting was held to set up
the Grand Tetons as a National Park. Our last stop here was the Church of the
Transfiguration, a little chapel with a huge window behind the altar with the
most magnificent view of the Tetons!! It is an Episcopal chapel with services
on Sunday. It was so beautiful, peaceful and tiny!! Neat!
I ate ribs at the Mangy Moose that night, Betty a bison
burger and Rod a burger, with, of course, the daily beer! Days are so packed
with activities that it’s hard to find time and energy in the evening to do
this blog. I’m writing now, later, while riding through flat less scenic
Montana. I can save these entries in Word and then upload at night. Although
last night in Idaho Falls the pool was broken (wouldn’t have stayed there with
kids) and internet never came up. Otherwise it was a bargain place!!
