Rod brought Michelle’s bike downtown for Betty to ride
around town while the rest of us did the tourist thing with the kids. Our first
stop was Voodoo Donuts, where the line was out the door and down the street for
the sweet pink boxes! Jackson waited in line with Kerry and Jay for the
goodies. Kids got a Fruit Loop covered one, Jay a maple topped with bacon,
Michelle got a chocolate covered gingerbread man shaped. Too sweet for so early
in the morning for me!

We drove around some of the neighborhoods following
Michelle. We parked the cars near Michelle’s work and Jay and Michelle went off
for their food tour of the lunch trucks. The rest of us met up with Kendra and
Christopher and headed down to the same café on the waterfront where Betty and
I had met up with the Dragon Boat paddlers a few days before. We had a lovely
lunch overlooking the Willamette River and harbor and then walked along the
boardwalk looking for the cable car up to the hospital. It was blocked off by construction
so we ended up catching the trolley instead. Christopher went back to work but
Kendra stayed with us as our local tour guide. We rode through downtown on the
trolley to the food trucks to meet up with Jay and Michelle.
Our next stop was back to the cars and over the bridge to
OMSI, a science center museum. Jay, Jackson and I opted for the submarine tour.
The rest wandered around the gift shop and Kerry and Sarah did some science
experiements in one of the rooms. Jackson had a great time sitting in the
control seat and climbing through the narrow passageways of the submarine. The
submarine crew is the most difficult to qualify for in the military – only 1%
of 1% of the applicants make it through all the psychological, physical, etc.
tests to qualify. Nor would I want to spend 60-90 days submerged! Too
claustrophobic for me!
Betty met us at the entrance after her day biking and we all
headed back home to pack up our things as Kerry, Jay and the kids were taking a
Red Eye flight that night at 8:30 p.m. for Boston. Their two weeks had come to
an end. They had a great visit with Grandpa in Bainbridge Island in Seattle, a
train ride down to Portland, and a long weekend visit with extended family! No
one was ready for it to end!!
We loaded the cars and drove over to Judy and Robert’s in
Vancouver, WA, over the Columbia River for dinner. She had not seen the kids
yet because of her weekend hospital stay. She was looking pretty good after her
ordeal! We ate leftovers out on their patio garden and had a lovely visit. Rod
and I followed them to the airport, said good-bye and I went home with Michelle
for a last night in Portland. Michelle is coming with us in the a.m. to San
Juan Islands for 2 days and Vancouver for 2 days. She will take the train home
on Sunday from Vancouver, BC, to Vancouver, WA!
